Like
many other call-makers, David Gaston began learning from master call
makers such as Gordon Hartley, and the legendary Alvin Taylor of
Clarendon, Arkansas. Mr. Taylor shared his years of experience with
David until he was satisfied that David could make duck calls that he
would be satisfactory to him. Under the guiding hands of Mr. Taylor,
David learned what it took, to produce a duck call that any hunter would
be proud to hang on his lanyard. David said, "Every call I make is a
tribute to Mr. Taylor and I am thankful for the friendship and trust
that Mr. Taylor put in me."
Acrylic calls have become the standard
by which all duck calls are measured. Gaston Acrylics are available in
their ever popular Field model for those larger hunting areas where
volume is needed as well as a limited number of color schemes in a
Timber model for that close in nasty, barky and raspy work. The timber
inserts are only available in the following colors: red, copper, clear,
black, mallard green, and smoke.
With a few simple modifications, you
can have your Gaston duck call converted to their special double reed
design which gives the call that low end whine and deep nasally sound
without sacrificing all of the high end duck.
Priced at a reasonable
$125.00 you can choose from a variety of colors in both a single-reed
and/or double-reed call. I purchased my first Gaston Call this year and
have really fallen in love with it. So, if you are looking to get into a
high-end duck call at a basement price, check out their website at

SHANE ROTEN'S ACRYLIC CALLS - Every now and then a call comes along that just seems to fit you. This is what has happened to me. I own a lot of duck calls, a lot of good duck calls!, but the acrylic double-reed call that I bought from Shane 3 years ago, has turned out to be one of the best duck hunting investments that I have ever made. I would just as soon crawl into the blind without my gun as to hunt without this call. Priced at $125.00, it is available in both a double-reed and a single-reed model, each carrying a lifetime guarantee on quality and workmanship. Shane's calls can be purchased from most of the leading waterfowl outfitters such as
Duck and
Goose Calls.Com.
Roten's calls are made in Louisiana and if you are lucky, you will run into him at one of your local outdoor shows. If so, take advantage of the opportunity to not only buy a call, but to visit with Shane, who is an extremely knowledgeable young man. Shane also makes a mold injected call named the "Vortex". I also own 2 of these calls. You won't find a better call in the $25.00 price range. Shane himself has the following praise for this call: - Easy to blow and requires less air. - Materials are not affected by moisture. - High impact synthetic will last a lifetime. - Each call is consistently tuned to perfection. - The range of notes are solid from top to bottom. - It perfectly duplicates the entire call sequence of a mallard hen. - Call at the top of your hail call without worrying about breaking over. And Like I said, for a price of $25.00, you won't find a better call on the market. The proof is in the performance. |

One of the best duck calls I ever owned is pictured here. It is a 1967 Indian Glo-Do
(pronounced glow-doe) which at that time you could order through Herter's. Today, both Herter's and the manufacturer of the Indian Glo-Do duck call are out of business. They tried to market this call for a short period in the early nineties, but they substituted a metal reed in lieu of the original plastic reed, and it just didn't have the sound or quality. It quickly died as a saleable item. I retired these calls in 1998 after 31 years of service.
